May Bank Holiday Beer Festival

The weekend of 4^th to 7^th of May is going to be a busy one for us as we have a mini Beer fest due to demand. As a result we will be putting 5 Strong Ales on the bar all over 5% ABV although we promise for those of you who like a session beer we will have one as well.

We also have a special offer for those of you who come in on the lunch time of the Beer Fest, buy a meal from our special list and your Real ale will be £3 a pint.

Wine & Cheese evening with Guy Boursot

On the 7^th in the evening for the Great Chart Street Party we will be having a wine and cheese event with a guest speaker Guy Boursot  www.boursot.co.uk/winewriter.html who has a Wine Shop in Ardres France and regularly speaks at wine events across Europe and beyond. He will be supplying 3 White wines & 3 Red wines all picked to go with locally bought Kent Cheeses. The cost of this event is £15 a head and includes 6 cheeses and 6 glasses of wine (125 ml).

We hope to end this evening with an Auction to raise funds for the Street Party.

Hoodeners Horse TwEAT Lunch

We have for 2 ½ years run a Friday lunch generally on the 3^rd Friday of each month which offers people the chance to meet each other. In May this will be the 18^th of the month, further details of this event can be found on our website here or click here to book.

Sunday Lunch 20^th of May

This time we will be offering a 2 or 3 course Sunday lunch with a choice of Beef, Lamb or Pork. The cost of 2 Courses will be £9.95 and 3 courses will be £11.95. This event is generally heavily booked so please book up early.

For those of you who haven’t been to see us recently…and we have to ask “Why not?”…this is what you’ve missed and what we’ve been up to over the summer to make our evenings enjoyable ones!

We’ve had several Beer Festivals, all designed to let you enjoy special Real Ales from across the country as well as from local breweries who we like to support! In addition we have been buying in local cider and English Wine from Kent Vineyards and we currently have a selection from Chapeldown, Throwley, Harbourne and Barnsole vineyards for you to enjoy with your meal.

Our popular fruit wines have been expanded to enable you to choose from a selection of 12 different varieties including Damson, Cherry, Apricot and peach.

On the food side we have introduced a number of new starters including “fish goujons with our homemade tartare sauce” and we will be looking at our dessert menu shortly as well as revamping our coffee and ice-cream ranges!

On the Patio we have built a new BBQ, which is available for both our own BBQ’s and for our customers to use during the summer months subject to certain conditions of course. We have already had several groups run their own BBQ’s on the back patio and a good time was had!

Of course we have not been without a share of problems during the summer and water leaks in the kitchen and bar as well as the cellar cooling having to be replaced has seen us tested at time to maintain the high standards we try and achieve! Our apologies to anyone inconvenienced!

We managed to get the “East Kent Morris Men” and the “Seven Champions Molly Dancers and Treacle Tarts” to visit the pub on two separate occasions and they surprised and delighted onlookers with an evening of folk music and dancing.  “It was probably our best pub stand this year” said Malcolm from the East Kent Morris Men and we look forward to their return next year.

So what’s coming up…?

For the autumn months and into winter we plan, more Sunday lunches, more business meetings, new menu specials and some early week food offers! We’ll throw in a beer festival or two and weather permitting we will make those cold autumn evenings warm with our Mexican Food offers and the warm and welcoming Hoodeners Horse atmosphere!

…is now the coolest.

Some of you will be aware that our cellar cooling recently equipment blew up which meant that for a while the beer was a bit warmer than we would have liked and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused whilst the repairs were undertaken.

However,we are pleased to say that we now have a brand new cooling system, normal service has been resumed  and we can once again raise a pint glass to cold beer!

“Deep in darkest Kent is a tiny place called Frittenden where the last surviving treacle mine exists. The Seven Champions are the treacle miners who work long hard hours in treacherous and ‘sticky’ conditions. After work they can be  found supping ale and entertaining folk at local taverns”

Hoodeners Horse regulars raise £3.5K at Help for Heroes charity night fun

Paul Thomason decided he wanted to raise some serious money for his favourite charity, Help for Heroes. He knew that his lively local pub, The Hoodeners Horse in Great Chart near Ashford, was the perfect place to do this.

“I wanted to celebrate my son, Ben’s safe return from a seven month tour of Afghanistan with a party but I thought maybe we could also raise money for some of those young soldiers who were not so lucky. The Help for Heroes staff were very helpful and even though it was inevitably a last-minute event I thought it could be done.”

So he approached manager John Harris to ask if he would mind turning over his pub for a night of games, raffles and a charity auction. Of course, John said yes .

“We’re always pleased when the locals get together for a good cause and were happy to help Paul and Help for Heroes.”

Local businesses, friends and pub goers generously donated prizes, including a ride in a Ferrari, Champions League tickets and a set of jewellery hand-made especially for the event.

“People’s generosity was simply amazing. Every local business I visited offered a prize; every one of the locals I spoke to offered to help with organising, donations of prizes, running the games, tombola, raffles and auction and of course enjoying the event in person.”

Competition for the amazing auction prizes was fierce, with bidding wars aplenty. Mad-cap games were the other big money spinner of the evening, with The Hoodeners Horse donating a bottle of Champagne and other, rather stronger, tipples as prizes. Even downing a pint of one of the seven real ales and local ciders helped raise money as 50p in every pint went straight to the charity. Paul’s brother, Martin (who recently completed a 240 mile sponsored cycle ride from London to Royal Wootton Bassett and back in 16 hours for Help 4 Heroes) also rode from London to the Hoodeners Horse on the night!

The night was a huge success, so far raising an astonishing £3,500 and more sales are due from H4H merchandise, so the final tally will be even higher. All in all a great success.

Paul said, “I knew I could count on the regulars of my local pub to make this a success as they have a long track record of generosity and raising money for charities over many years. People make pubs and they certainly made this a great night for Ben and for the Help for Heroes charity.”
